Get to know Board member Melissa Johnson

Meet Melissa Johnson, a dedicated member of the Center of Hope’s Board of Directors! We asked Melissa to share her thoughts on the Center and her journey so far
How long have you been a Board member? About two years.
Why did you choose to join the Board? I was extremely impressed by Pam when I came for a tour. I was originally referred through my employer as someone reached out with a need for board members, but when I saw how Pam interacted with participants, that is what made me want to be a part of the organization. It isn’t usually for an Executive Director to be in the weeds and know every participant’s name. I knew at that tour that she was someone who believed in the mission and I wanted to support that.
Please describe what being on the Board means to you. Being on the board to me means that I have the opportunity to share my banking knowledge to help with the organizations sustainability and at times encourage a different perspective to the status quo.
What would you say to a prospective Board member? I would let them know that what we do matters. I feel this is a good in between from a working board, but there is need for our input and feedback everyday as members of the community.
What is the biggest change you’ve seen since you joined the Board? I feel the board has become much more diverse from when I joined. We still have a long way to go, but we’ve done a much better job at attracting younger members with different perspectives of late.
What keeps you on the Board? I stay on the board because I genuinely believe BOCOH is making a great impact in our community.
