Barbara Olson Center of Hope receives Community Foundation grant

by Barbara Olson Center of Hope | Feb 07, 2019

Barbara Olson Center of Hope
is proud to announce it has received a $9,839.00 grant for project Greater Impact and Effectiveness through Technology. The grant was awarded by the Bengt & Mary Kuller Endowment Fund of the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois’ Community Grants Program.

IPads, equipped with educational apps, will be purchased to help participants living with autism and related disabilities overcome communication challenges and enhance the quality of their lives. The personal computer equipment will be used to improve the effectiveness of training for the direct support staff, as well as develop lesson plans and activities for the participants.

The purchase of the technology equipment will provide the needed support for staff at the Barbara Olson Center of Hope to more efficiently and effectively fulfill its mission to help individuals with developmental disabilities reach personal goals through individualized skill development, vocational opportunities and community service.

“Often, for our individuals with severe developmental disabilities, accomplishing daily tasks such as communicating with others or participating in daily living activities can be a challenge. This grant will be used to purchase new computer equipment and assistive technology to improve the effectiveness and impact in preparing and conducting training for both participants and staff. We are so appreciative of the Community Foundation,” said Carm Herman, executive director. She went on to say, “This grant from the Community Foundation will give us a means to replace various pieces of our technology equipment, some of which is 10 years old.”

Jon Bates, president, Community Foundation of Northern Illinois stated, “Supporting services and activities that promote inclusion for people with disabilities is one of the priorities for CFNIL’s grant investments in human services. Barbara Olson Center of Hope has a long history of providing innovative and individualized services that help every participant reach their full potential; we are pleased to support their ongoing work.”
